The Importance of Home Learning

At Tamaoho School, we recognise the vital role that home learning plays in reinforcing school learning and improving learning outcomes. We understand that the concept of "stickability"—the ability to retain and apply knowledge—can be significantly enhanced through consistent practice at home.

Home learning is an opportunity for learners to consolidate their understanding, develop self-discipline and build learning habits that last a lifetime. Engaging in 20-30 minutes of focused home learning, 4-5 times a week, allows learners to revisit and reinforce what they’ve learned in school, making connections that deepen their comprehension.

We understand that whaanau have busy schedules, and we are committed to supporting our learners with manageable and meaningful home learning. We have designed our home learning to be simple and focused, ensuring that it complements classroom learning without overwhelming learners or their families.

Home learning includes:

  • Spelling

  • Handwriting (Learners get a handwriting book)

  • Reading (books need to be kept in a book bag)

  • Maths knowledge

  • All 5-year-olds will receive a transition to school home learning pack at their 5-week check-in meeting with your child’s whaanau teacher.

All home learning can be found on the literacy or mathematics page or by clicking on the green question mark next to your child’s goals on Hero Report.

Please always pop into school and ask questions; we are here to help.

Together, we can help our learners achieve their full potential and foster a love for lifelong learning.
