Enviro Schools
Tamaoho School is proud to have achieved the Silver Enviroschool Award which highlights our commitment to sustainability and environmental education. This recognition reflects our dedication to caring for the land and the ocean, following the example of the great leader Tamaoho who valued and respected the natural world. Through our efforts, we aim to instil a sense of responsibility in all our learners, empowering them to make positive environmental choices. Together, we are building a sustainable future for our community and the generations to come. Below are some of the opportunities we have at Tamaoho School to support being an ENVIRO school.
Walking School Bus
The Walking School Bus is important because it promotes physical activity, reduces traffic congestion and increases safety for children travelling to and from school. It also encourages community engagement and fosters a sense of independence and responsibility among learners. If you would like to help and support, please email principal@tamaoho.school.nz
The Garden to Table Programme
The Garden to Table programme is an integral part of our school curriculum for Nikau learners, aligning with the Social Sciences curriculum by teaching essential life skills. Through this programme, learners gain hands-on experience in growing their vegetables and maintaining a garden, fostering a deeper understanding of sustainability and the environment. By participating in cooking activities using their harvested produce, learners develop valuable cooking skills and an appreciation for healthy eating. This holistic approach not only enhances their knowledge of food sources but also encourages teamwork, responsibility, and self-sufficiency.
Chickens
We are proud to have six delightful chickens living in the "Chicken Palace" within our sensory garden. Our learners take an active role in caring for the chickens, ensuring they are well-fed and happy and collecting fresh eggs each day. These eggs are available for purchase through KINDO or are used in our Garden to Table programme. Our chickens are a beloved part of our school community and they provide a unique hands-on learning experience that our learners cherish.
Vegetable Gardens
Our school vegetable garden, thoughtfully designed by our learners, is a thriving space where learners engage in hands-on learning. Nikau learners are dedicated caretakers who are actively involved in planting, weeding and harvesting produce each term. This garden not only enhances their understanding of the growing process but also instils a sense of responsibility and teamwork. Through their efforts, learners gain valuable life skills and an appreciation for fresh, healthy food.
Outdoor Kitchen
Our outdoor kitchen, designed and created by our learners in 2022, provides a vibrant space for learners to cook and enjoy the food they prepare. In this setting, learners practice setting tables and cleaning up after themselves, including washing dishes fostering independence and responsibility. This hands-on experience not only teaches culinary skills but also enhances social skills as learners work together and share meals.
Sensory Garden
Our sensory garden, designed by our learners during a Maths Week challenge in 2023, offers a calming and safe environment for learners to self-regulate when feeling upset. This thoughtfully crafted space includes a sensory pathway, sandpit, water play area, swinging hammock, loose parts play and a playhouse and boat. Our beloved chickens are also part of this tranquil setting, providing additional comfort and engagement for all learners as part of a fully inclusive school. The sensory garden is an awesome space for learners to retreat when overwhelmed, helping them find peace and balance amidst the school day.
